About the North Zone Library

The North Zone library consists of 46 libraries which include 4 branches which work from 8.30 am to 8 pm. 26 Branches which works from 8.30 am to 11.30 am and from 4 to 8 pm. 8 Vachanalayas (Only News paper section). 7 Gram panchaythi libraries and 1 Children library. North zone has collection of Books, Magazines and Dailies/News papers. We also procure postal Magazines.

Main Section of libraries:

Periodical Section

The Periodicals Section is the place where needed information could be found in journals, magazines, newspapers, and other serial literature. There is a growing demand in the areas of newspapers, journals and magazines research. We have News papers and Magazines in Periodical section.

Circulation Section

This section includes novels and general books. Readers can borrow books which are available in this section for 15 days of duration. Most of Kannada novels are borrowed regularly in this section; few people come to this section to refer general books as well.

Library circulation or library lending comprises the activities around the lending of library books and other material to users of a lending library. A circulation or lending department is one of the key departments of a library. The main public service point is the circulation desk. Circulation Section provides lending services and facilities for return book. Renewal of materials and payment of fines are also handled at the circulation desk. Readers can ask for basic search and questions for availability of books in Circulation section for lending.

Reference Section

Libraries are playing a dominating role and we have to accept its challenges and ride with the wave. The state of libraries in a country reflects states of its cultural attainment in relation to other developed and developing nations. Reading of good books certainly stimulates the development of intellectual resources. Here come the roles of libraries in making available the recorded knowledge/information to the members of society for their intellectual development. Reference service is considered as the hub of all library activities, the supreme and ultimate function of the library and the very essence of librarianship.

Reference Section in Malleshwaram Library Consists of Encyclopedia, Dictionaries, Year Book, General Books, And Competitive Books. This section is always jam packed with young readers who are preparing for competitive examinations.

Pioneer of library science in India Dr. S. R. Ranganathan called reference service as The Preportant achievement of modern humanism in library services.

He said, The happiest moment in life of a librarian is the moment of his doing reference service. It is the heart of library service.

Reference service plays an important role in satisfying the laws of library science. It helps to maximize the use of the library. It is necessary to make a desired kind of contact between the user and the document.

Today, we are living in an information age. Information has become an important resource possibly as important as oil. Information is power. A lot of our activities revolve around information. Realizing the importance of information.

There is a rapid growth in scientific technical and commercial knowledge which needs to keep the scientist abreast with the latest information and therefore in order to provide an accurate information at the time of need, facilities of reference service must be there to widen the horizon of information retrieval to the information seeker.
